John Oliver Reveals The Matt Gaetz Joke His Lawyers Warned Him Not To Make

John Oliver spent part of his Sunday evening tearing into President-elect Donald Trump’s Cabinet nominees, calling them awful “even by his low standards.”
But he saved his harshest quips for former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), Trump’s pick for attorney general. Oliver said that when Gaetz was in high school, he was voted “most likely to not be allowed within 500 feet of here.”
Gaetz was under federal investigation in a sex trafficking probe involving a 17-year-old girl, although no charges were brought and the investigation was eventually dropped. He was also under investigation by the House Ethics Committee until his resignation last week.
Oliver played a supercut in which Gaetz was blasted by conservatives, including former national security adviser John Bolton, who said Gaetz’s selection “must be the worst nomination for a Cabinet position in American history.”
“It might,” Oliver agreed. “But get used to it, because ‘the worst blank in American history’ is going to be this administration’s MO going forward. So, get ready for the worst Easter egg roll in American history. The Easter Bunny will be on fire, every egg will be filled with expired mayonnaise, and all the kids who don’t win will be immediately put into foster care.”
Oliver noted that one Republican lawmaker said “are you shittin’ me?” when he was told Trump had picked Gaetz.
He called that reaction “objectively the correct response to the idea that this guy could be attorney general: a man who my lawyers insist I cannot call ‘Jeffrey Epstein if he went to shittier beaches,’ so I am not going to do that.”
